Famous Art as Wooden Puzzles: The Unidragon Art Collection

by Unidragon US · May 21, 2026

If you're shopping for someone who actually goes to museums, this guide is for you. We carry wooden puzzles of Van Gogh's Starry Night, the Mona Lisa, Hokusai's Great Wave, Bruegel's Tower of Babel, Gaudí's Sagrada Familia, and a few cherry-blossom and cityscape designs that sit comfortably next to those names.

None of these are cardboard. Pieces are cut from HDF, 3mm thick, with a satisfying weight you can feel when you pick one up. They're not faster to build than cardboard. They're slower, sturdier, and they hold up on a wall for years after you finish.

The famous painting puzzles

Van Gogh's Starry Night

Starry Night. $159.99. 1000 pieces. 17.4 by 22 inches.

The swirling night sky over Saint-Rémy. We had to argue about whether the wood format really captures Van Gogh's brushstroke texture. It mostly does. Run a finger across the finished piece and you'll feel the layered edges where adjacent pieces meet, which approximates (loosely) the original impasto.

This one is hard. Blue and yellow repeat across almost the entire canvas, so sorting by exact shade matters more than usual. Plan on 10 to 15 hours of build time. The reward is a finished piece that doesn't look like a poster.

Mona Lisa

Mona Lisa. $87.99. 1000 pieces. 15.35 by 23.2 inches.

The most-recognized portrait in the world. Soft, gradient tones throughout, so there are no bright zones to anchor on. The face area will frustrate you. We rebuilt ours twice.

If you want a famous-painting puzzle at the more accessible price point in this line, this is the one. Skip it if your puzzler hates subtle color work.

Hokusai's Great Wave

The Great Wave off Kanagawa. $159.99. 1000 pieces. 23.2 by 15.3 inches.

The 1831 woodblock print of the giant wave with Mount Fuji in the distance. Hokusai's original was carved into wood blocks. Turning it back into a wooden puzzle feels like the design coming full circle.

Tower of Babel (Bruegel)

Tower of Babel. $159.99. 1000 pieces. 17.1 by 23.4 inches.

Bruegel the Elder painted this in 1563. Windows, balconies, masonry layers, dozens of tiny figures working on the tower. The architectural pattern means you can sort by region (which storey, which side) instead of just by color. It's the easier of the four 1000-piece masterpieces in this collection.

Architectural icons

Sagrada Familia

Sagrada Familia. Two sizes available:

  • Size S: $39.99, 125 pieces, 8.2 × 5.5 in. About 90 minutes of work.
  • Size M: $49.99, 250 pieces, 12.2 × 9 in. About three hours.

Gaudí's Barcelona cathedral. Spires and Gothic-modernist detailing translate to the wooden format better than you'd expect. If you (or your gift recipient) have been to Barcelona, this is a no-brainer.

Classic Wonderhouse

Classic Wonderhouse. $69.99. 500 pieces. 16.9 × 11.4 inches.

A Victorian architectural fantasy: multi-storied house with balconies, gables, ornamental trim. Frames beautifully as a single piece. Pairs well next to Sagrada Familia if you build both.

Japanese-themed wooden puzzles

Sakura

Sakura, the cherry blossom design, in three sizes:

  • Size S: $39.99, 125 pieces (~90 min)
  • Size M: $49.99, 250 pieces (~3 hours)
  • King Size: $69.99, around 500 pieces (~5 hours)

Our most-stocked puzzle (1,885 units across sizes). The pink and cream palette is gentle, the build is relaxed, and the wooden format suits the subject. If someone wants something pretty without 10 hours of effort, this is the answer.

WOOSAIC Sakura (1000 pcs)

WOOSAIC Sakura. $69.99. 1000 pieces. 23.6 × 17.3 inches.

Same Sakura artwork, mosaic-cut. Pieces are smaller and the cuts are denser. The finished image has more visual depth than the standard cut. Limited stock, so check availability before you commit.

Cityscape: Amsterdam

Amsterdam City (Evening). Three sizes from $39.99 to $69.99.

Canals, gabled houses, bridges at dusk. Closer to a travel postcard than a museum painting, but with enough composition complexity that you'll want to frame it afterward.

Why wooden, not cardboard, for famous art

You can buy a Mona Lisa or Starry Night puzzle in cardboard from any major brand. It costs half as much. So why pay more?

Four honest reasons:

The finished puzzle feels like an object. HDF pieces are 3mm thick. Once assembled, the puzzle has weight, slight texture, and visible piece edges that catch light. Cardboard is paper-flat. For famous paintings with brushstroke depth, wood gets closer to the original.

It frames properly. Cardboard puzzles, once glued, slightly warp over months in a humid frame. Wooden puzzles stay flat. If you want this on a wall for years, wood is the safer choice.

Whimsy pieces. Several of our art puzzles include shaped pieces hidden in the design: small figures, objects, animals tied to the artwork. Starry Night hides celestial shapes. Tower of Babel hides architectural elements. Sagrada Familia hides Gaudí motifs. Read more about whimsy pieces if you're new to the idea.

It reads as a real gift. A $159 wooden puzzle in a designer box reads as serious. A $25 cardboard puzzle of the same painting reads as an impulse buy. Art-loving recipients spot the difference instantly.

Picking the right one as a gift

Match the painting to the person:

  • Van Gogh fan or museum-goer: Starry Night ($159) is the safe pick. Recognized everywhere.
  • Art history student: Mona Lisa ($87) hits the most-famous portrait at a gentler price.
  • Loves Japan or has traveled there: The Great Wave (when back in stock) or Sakura King Size ($69).
  • Renaissance and Northern European art enthusiast: Tower of Babel ($159).
  • Barcelona traveler or Gaudí fan: Sagrada Familia Size M ($49).
  • New to puzzles but wants beautiful artwork: Sakura Size M ($49) or Sagrada Familia Size S ($39).

A note on difficulty

The four 1000-piece masterpieces (Starry Night, Mona Lisa, Great Wave, Tower of Babel) are the hardest puzzles we sell. They share one trait: subtle gradient color zones with few high-contrast anchor points. If the recipient is new to wooden puzzles or to 1000-piece builds, start with a Size M (Sakura M or Sagrada M). Don't gift a 10-hour puzzle to someone who's never finished one.

Frequently asked

Are these officially licensed reproductions? The original paintings (Van Gogh, Da Vinci, Bruegel, Hokusai) are in the public domain. The modern wooden-puzzle interpretations are designed by our artists.

How does the artwork translate to HDF? We use a high-resolution scan of the original, color-balanced for the HDF surface (which reflects light slightly differently than canvas). Colors are slightly more saturated to compensate. Side by side, they're close, not identical.

Can I frame the finished puzzle? Yes, and many people do. The 1000-piece sizes fit standard custom frames. HDF doesn't warp in a frame.
